Themed Beds

Kids Themed Beds

Themed beds come in the widest variety of shapes, sizes, colours, uses, materials and of course price. The main limitation to a themed bed is the size of the room and the relationship you’ve got with your bank manager!

If you’re little one is begging for a sports car bed or a princess carriage we’ll try to help a little by briefly explaining themed beds below.

Although there are so many choices when it comes to a themed bed you’ll find that the same themes are often used with wildly varying differences. The main differences are directly related to the price of the bed and also the overall quality of the bed.

The main themes are those which kids ask for (demand and supply) include:
Sports Car, Fire Engine, Princess Carriage, Boats and Digger/Tractor.

Construction

As themed beds have unusual shapes and always involve lots of colour less traditional “bed building” materials are used, instead manufacturers prefer materials such as MDF covered in child safe hard wearing paints.

MDF stands for Medium Density Fibreboard and is a type of hardboard, which is made from wood fibres glued under heat and pressure. MDF may have been given a bad image due to the saturation of DIY makeover programmes on television over the last decade, but it really is a great material. Firstly it’s inexpensive cutting the cost of an already potentially expensive bed, secondly it can be cut into elaborate shapes making themed beds become more elaborate and visually appealing, it can also be very strong when used in conjunction with the rest of the bed and can be painted in any choice of colour. Also there are no knots in MDF and the surface is uniform and smooth.

Another advantage to some themed beds is the way they can be personalised with your childs name, or with colours of your choice. Some inexpensive themed beds (around the £350-£550 price range) are simple constructions and are more visually appealing than “functional”. They still offer a great place for your child to sleep and will provide years of love. More expensive themed beds cost much more (£1200+) and are much more elaborate, some with moving parts, lights, steering wheels and the like. These are the Rolls Royce of beds and are impressive and dominate any room.

A word of caution when you’re buying a themed bed; themes are like fads/fashion – they don’t last long. No sooner have you spent a small fortune decorating your kids bedroom they’ll be thinking of the next one. Expect themed beds and strongly themed bedrooms to last no more than around 3-4 years, you can always pass the furniture on to any other brother/sister if possible.
