Decorating girls and boys bedrooms based on a theme can be a challenging and rewarding task. With so many different themes it can be difficult to decide on how you're going to decorate. In this topic were going to look at ways to decorate boys rooms using a theme.
Shortcut to the theme you're looking for:
Boys love strong dominant colours with bright reds and blues being the most common choice. These bold colours are often best used as an accent or to highlight a certain wall/feature so be careful.
Basic steps to take before doing anything else;
TIP: Make realistic promises to your son(s) in terms of outcome and timescales, you should allow at least two days to complete the room.
We’ve started you off with some ideas below, remember to let your son(s) have input into the process of decorating.
For an instant safari theme use some pre-cut self adhesive Jungle Stikarounds.
Paint the walls yellow, or any of the colours found in the pack of Jungle Stikarounds, remember to make sure the colours work together by reading our page on The Colour Wheel.
Get your son to help you apply the wall stickers and he’ll love his jungle even more.
Try to co-ordinate the colours of the walls and the stickers/wallpaper with fabrics and accessories in matching colours and themes. Remember as this is your boys’ room try to keep powder pastel shades to a minimum (or don’t use them at all). Use bolder blues and greens/yellows for the main colours on the walls. A grass green carpet works well with this theme.
Remember Stikarounds can also be used on furniture, why not add some more to the bed and other furniture in the room? Try hanging jungle camouflage, a butterfly net, or mosquito net on the walls or the ceiling. Use cuddly lions and tigers as accessories, remember, nothing too girly!
This is an ideal theme for little boys who love to play builder, made much more popular over the last decade with Bob the Builder on kids TV.
Use light pastel blues on walls and use stronger related blues in fabrics and accessories.
Strong yellows also add to the theme but be careful not to go over the top, best used in fabrics and accessories, a good idea is to have a sand yellow rug, or why not cover any seating or bed in a sandy yellow fabric?
Fun Kids Rooms sell Bob The Builder Stikarounds, a perfect match for creating a great themed room for boys.
This is a favourite for slightly older boys coming into their teenage years. Just above dado rail height paint a sky blue, a lighter shade than you might think, and below either be bold and use a light grey (for the race track) or even a light green. When the paint is dry add clouds to the blue by using an old rag dipped in white paint, with any excess removed on an old newspaper. Add rolling hills on the horizon in a grass green. Apply the border at dado rail height you should try to find tall borders with an unobvious pattern repeat, chequered obviously a great one.
For fabrics use nothing too dark, especially if you’ve been brave and painted a darker colour below the border. Use lighter fabrics to bring colour back into the room, a bright sports car reds work well.
For furniture, well it has to be a sports car bed. Any young boy would love to own his very own Sports car bed, coming soon to the Fun Kids Rooms website a collection of themed beds.
To co-ordinate the rest of his furniture either paint a matching colour, or cover in stickers and accessories. Use a check fabric on the duvet and curtains and try to use a large check if used over a large area. Novelty lights in the form of a set of traffic lights can make this theme come alive.
Send your little fella into orbit with his own space theme. Make him the captain of his own space ship with this theme.
Mark out large windows on the wall (using a level) and use masking tape around the edges. Paint the walls a light blue colour, and paint inside the windows with a darker purple. When all the paint is dry take a small amount of white paint and a pencil, and dip the tip of the pencil into the paint, and mark out stars on the darker purple. Take your time and try to make stars of varying sizes to amazing effect.
Once all the room had been painted, and has dried, its time to add accessories. Shiny fabrics are the order of the day, silvers greys, blues and rich purples.
To add an extra dimension go to your local plumbers and get some aluminium heating duct (the sort off a boiler), hang the duct from wall to ceiling etc for a true inside a space ship feel. If you know anyone getting shut of an old washing machine strip it apart and hand all space looking things in his room. The extra effort really is worth it!
If your boy loves trains then this themed bedroom is sure to be a success. If a lack creative inspiration has been holding you back from making your little ones dream bedroom a reality then get ready to hop on board the decorating express.
Remember it’s important to keep your boys room functional as well as looking great, you might need to adapt the tips we give so that his room remains practical. Also keep in mind the age of your boy and make any necessary changes that increase his safety.
Before you begin decorating it is best to establish an inspiration piece that the rest of your decorating will centre around. In a bedroom the most inspiring item one can have is, of course, the bed. Special themed beds can now make a dramatic impact in your kids’ bedroom and can make the theme really come to life. Imagine how happy your train lover would be if he got to play and sleep in his very own train! Train themed bedding can also be used to help complete the look of the main focal point in the room and tie the theme together.
If you’re on a budget, or simply don’t want to spend so much on a new bed, why not try making your own train themed headboard. 18mm MDF boards can easily have a design drawn on and then cut into all sorts of elaborate shapes. When painting the headboard first make sure you seal the MDF with some PVA mixed with water (about 50/50). Once dry use some child friendly paint to finish the look.
Now that you have the centrepiece looking great it’s time to finish the rest of the themed bedroom. Try not to go over the top with your theme as too much can often make a cluttered uncoordinated look.
If you want to use wallpaper or printed murals/friezes there are many on the market that will help with the train theme. We would recommend making the walls a nice countryside vista as the bed has now become the train.
Shelving units can also be made to co-ordinate with the theme and can be made the same way as the headboard (as above). Soft furnishings and lightshades can all help finish the look of the bedroom and bring together the train theme.
