Boys Rooms

Happy Boys

Sometimes it seems boys want to change the décor in their bedroom more than they bathe! Don’t worry decorating needn’t be as hard as many parents might think.

Let Fun Kids Rooms help, in this topic we're going to start by looking at fun ways to decorate a boys room without having to use a theme. In other topics we examine which themes work well and offer tips and advice on how to create a wonderful masterpiece he'll love.

Decorating boys' bedrooms can be a challenging, but rewarding task. With so many different ideas and themes it can be difficult to decide on how you're going to decorate. Take a few minutes to read the following advice and get some great tips that will help you get your sons room finished in next to no time.

Where to begin?

Start every decorating project by first talking to your child and asking him what he would like. Involving your child from the beginning can avoid any upsets when your idea of a great room, isn't quite what they had in mind. Asking him what he likes/dislikes allows him to express his identity in his most personal space, and can also be a great bonding experience. Remember children don't often have a good sense of interior design, if they ask for a black or dark purple bedroom, colours that either don't match, or are a short-term fad, try to point out that rich colours can be added in fabrics or accent walls. It's great to let him help hands-on, let him select fabrics and perhaps splash some paint on the walls!

The first thing you should think about is the overall colour scheme. It is a good idea at this point for you to look at The Colour Wheel.

For a long-term colour scheme try to paint the walls a neutral or soft pastel colour. Pick at most no more than two or three soft shades that are Monochromatic.

If you want to introduce a little colour on the walls use either a Complementary colour for a contrast or a Related colour to add harmony.

Fabrics

For fabrics boys love rich plain colours with little or no pattern. Dark blues can be mixed with strong reds and yellows, keeping in mind what colours work with each other, see Colour wheel. Add camouflage nets to the ceiling and walls and use greens on beds and/or futons.

Bedroom furniture

Now all that's left is the furniture. This section is aimed at the more traditional way to decorate a bedroom.

Using a modular design bed can add years of longevity to any bed by simply adding/removing to it as required. Fun kids Rooms are proud to offer the entire range of modular beds from multi award winning kids furniture manufacturers, Thuka. The range is called Kids-Space and we offer it at the cheapest prices anywhere. Thuka and Kids-Space beds come with co-ordinating furniture, the perfect way to tie the whole room scheme together.

If you've got a slightly older child then there's a good chance they hide away in their room, fighting for their own space and identity. This means more and more kids rooms are becoming multifunctional and require more than just a place to sleep. Kids now use their bedrooms to watch TV, play games, do homework and entertain. Fun Kids Rooms provide a full range of high quality futons, ideal for mates to sit on while watching TV, and futons are even better as a second bed. Futon beds are a great inexpensive way to provide high quality seating, in many different styles and colours, with plenty of different fabric options, and they offer a great place for friends to sleepover. Futons have come a long way, to find out more visit our seating page.

Lighting

One of the most important things in any room (not just a kids bedroom) is lighting. Lighting effects our moods as well as changing the whole "feel" to a room, all at the flick of a switch. Ceiling lights range from a simple shade to an amazing wooden/metal/glass design with moving parts such as aeroplanes, sports cars and even football lights. Table top/desk lights are great supplementary light sources and can really make the mood of a room. Fun Kids Rooms are soon to include an extensive collection of lights including, many great design ceiling lights, funky table (plug in) lamps and cool mood lights.
